Intel Vietnam has combined geosynchronous satellite and WiMAX to spot-beam high-speed wireless Internet into a remote mountainous region of far northern Vietnam. The project was done in collaboration with USAID and Vietnam Data Communication Company, and is intended to demonstrate that it's possible to connect even the most remote areas to the 21st century (and do so at a cost that makes it economically feasible on a wider scale). Previously, this area had only two old-style phone lines (no Internet).
